FAQs

What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science, a way of thinking, and a holistic approach to problem solving and skill development. Consistent implementation of ABA therapy has helped our clients acquire a variety of new and essential developmental skills. ABA therapy, when provided by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, is considered the single most effective way for individuals with autism to learn the necessary skills to better access the natural environment, and lead richer and fuller lives.

What services do you provide?

At Golden State Autism Centers, we utilize the fundamental principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy in order to develop language, social, academic, and daily living skills in children ages 0–21 with autism and related conditions. We offer best-in-class assessment, treatment, and intervention services, which are conducted at our incredible clinics or in the convenience of your home.

Do you diagnose autism spectrum disorder?

At Golden State, we do not conduct diagnostic assessments for autism spectrum disorder. We recommend that you contact your health insurance provider for guidance on how to access diagnostic services.

Who is eligible for ABA services?

ABA therapy has received widespread recognition as an effective and evidence-based treatment for individuals on the autism spectrum. As a result, legislative measures have been enacted to ensure that children who have received an ASD diagnosis have access to ABA therapy services. If your child has received a diagnosis of ASD, our administrative personnel will collect the necessary paperwork and coordinate with your insurance provider to determine your level of eligibility.

Do we need a referral?

Each insurance network has different requirements on how to access ABA therapy services. We are happy to help you walk through this process and also recommend that you contact your health insurance provider for your specific plan details.

What insurance is accepted?

We are currently in-network with BCBS Magellan, BCBS Anthem, Aetna, Cofinity, Cigna, MHN Health Net, and Alta California Regional Center.

Where are you located?

Our premiere clinic is located in Sacramento, California and serves clients in the city and surrounding communities.

Where does therapy take place?

Many of our clients receive therapy exclusively at our clinic, while other clients opt for in-home services. Still others prefer a combination of both types of settings. At Golden State Autism Centers, we understand that families have busy schedules. Thus, while we are incredibly proud of our facilities, Golden State Autism Centers is pleased to offer our clients the option of receiving the same standard of care in the comfort and convenience of their own homes.

What does a typical session look like?

While therapy programs are highly individualized based on the needs of the client, all sessions share some similarities in basic structure and format. Therapy is always delivered in a one-on-one format to ensure that each of our clients receives the attention that he or she requires. Much of a typical session will be conducted in a private therapy room, though our clinics incorporate plenty of space for play and socialization as well.

How long is a typical session on average?

A typical session can last around 4 hours on average, but may be shorter or longer depending on the availability of your family and the needs of your child. This time is completely devoted to your child’s individual learning needs. Skills are taught in a variety of ways, both through structured tasks and in natural social contexts. Frequent positive reinforcement is a key feature of a therapy session and the means by which therapists will develop your child’s repertoire of functional and adaptive skills.

What is the role of the BCBA? What is the role of the technician?

As a board-certified expert in the clinical application of behavioral principles, the BCBA is responsible for conducting assessments to identify deficits, designing programs that address your child’s individual needs, and providing ongoing supervision to your child’s primary therapists. Your child’s BCBA will also provide hands on training to parents and caregivers on the principles of applied behavior analysis as well as strategies to increase overall independence.

The role of the behavior technician is to provide direct, one-on-one therapy for your child under the supervision of a BCBA. Golden State Autism Centers employs only highly skilled technicians who undergo thorough training in the methods of ABA and work in close collaboration with their supervisors as a therapy team devoted solely to the needs of your child.

Why are so many hours recommended?

Research supporting the efficacy of ABA therapy consistently suggests that best results are achieved through intensive intervention. As a result, many of our clients receive therapy for 20 hours a week or more. Our talented clinicians will work with you to determine a therapy schedule that works for your family and is effective in meeting your child’s needs.

What is the best age to start?

Many children with special needs will benefit from early intervention. The earlier one begins therapy, the more opportunities there will be to address skill deficits and challenging behaviors. This is not to say, however, that there is a limit to a child’s potential at any age. Golden State Autism Centers’ clinicians possess the resources and expertise to teach essential skills to children of all ages.

How do we get started?

Interested families are encouraged to call our clinic during regular business hours or submit an inquiry on our Contact page. A client relations specialist will promptly be in touch to answer any questions you may have and will be happy to arrange a tour or intake for you and your family. Our goal is to make sure that each and every child has access to quality therapy, and we will do everything we can to make this initial process as worry-free as possible.
